Why do different dentists recommend different treatments?

With dental diagnosing, it can sometimes be a little subjective, depending on the expertise and the philosophy of the dentist themselves. One dentist might be more conservative, while another might have more experience with different procedures and therefore recommend those procedures more often if they've seen a higher success rate in their practice.

Another reason might be the dentist's skill set. One dentist may have received further training or different educational courses that allow them to perform more complex treatments or offer different options for a specific tooth or situation.

A dentist's philosophy can also play a role. Sometimes we have a conservative dentist versus a proactive dentist, and that is a personal philosophy that the dentist develops, usually dictating their treatment plan. There's no right or wrong answer with conservative dentistry. It really depends on how far along the disease or situation has progressed. Some dentists prefer to be more conservative and try less aggressive treatments first, while others want to address the issue immediately to avoid guesswork and have a more predictable outcome. That's the difference between conservative versus proactive approaches.

How do technology, imaging, and diagnostic tools influence treatment planning?

We're able to be more confident and assertive in what we are seeing and diagnosing. This might lead us to be more proactive versus conservative when we can clearly see the issue. We'll address the problem directly and resolve it right away. In contrast, if the technology isn't as advanced, we might take a more conservative approach due to less clear diagnostic evidence.

At Delgato Dental Group, we use a 3D X-ray when diagnosing, allowing us to see the bone and teeth in three dimensions and have a much higher quality diagnostic ability. We also have other tools and technology that help us see cavities and different diseases in the tooth in different colors, providing clear guidelines for treatment planning.

How do a patient's long-term goals affect treatment planning?

Sometimes a patient might come in for an emergency or a specific issue. Depending on their long-term goals, finances, pain level, and situation, we might focus on that one problem to address it immediately. When a patient comes in, we also perform a comprehensive exam. This involves looking at the entire mouth and developing a game plan that both the patient and we agree upon as the best treatment to achieve the healthiest state for their mouth while meeting the patient's aesthetic and overall health goals.

Treatment planning may also be influenced by whether the patient wants to save their teeth and preserve them as long as possible versus having the most predictable and best long-term plan. If a patient wants to retain their teeth, the treatment plan will look different than if they want to proceed with a more definitive option, such as a full mouth restoration with implants and dentures. This will dictate how we move forward with the treatment, either by preserving what's healthy or completely removing the disease.

What to do if receiving different treatment plans from dentists?

If a patient receives two different treatment plans or options and is unsure which to choose, I recommend having another conversation with the dentist to ensure that their goals align with the patient's long-term and short-term plans. If there's anything unclear about the treatment plan, make sure to ask the dentist and go through it again with them.
